How to Transform the Camera Tripod for Binocular Use

Nowadays amateur astronomers can get the devices such as binoculars or a monocular easily. But it makes no sense to look at a bright star holding the devices in the hands. Even a small pair of binoculars will show you all available objects only on a stable tripod, not to mention the larger instruments. So let’s talk about simple devices for manufacturing which are needed for binocular use.

If you have an extra tripod you don’t use anymore and want to save money, you can transform it into a binocular tripod. Having DIY skills you can easily do this task and enjoy the view you are looking forward to seeing. This task takes a few hours. First of all, be sure you have the following materials:

  • Binoculars
  • File
  • Metal
  • Saw solder
  • Screwdriver
  • Screws
  • Soldering Iron
  • Tripod
  • Wood

Instructions:

  1. Remove the camera plate that is on the tripod. This plate is used for getting the camera out of the tripod. So then you can do the same with the binoculars. Take the wood. Saw it into an appropriate shape to match the place of the camera. Take into account that the thickness of the wood plate must be the same as for the camera. Then angle the sides to look like the sides of the camera plate. Lock it in the place to see if it fits well.
  2. The next step is to fit the binocular support. Use a wide piece of wood deeply enough for the binoculars holding. Don’t fit it too deep because you may have problems to fit the nose into the space. And pay attention to the wood wideness not to balance the binoculars later. When everything is ready, attach the wood to the plate and put I right in the centre of the support.
  3. Before screwing the wood together, screw holes for the attachments diagonally opposite each other. In such a way the pressure will be distributed equally and there won’t be any slipping. Then it’s better to file the screws down not to penetrate through the other supporting side.
  4. If you want to paint the support, do it.

As an alternative, you can make the plate and the support of metal. Then you’ll need to solder the edges. When your wooden (metal) support is ready, fit it onto the camera tripod. And enjoy its using.
